WHEAT

- Feb 3 - Argentina grants export licenses for 301,670 MT of milling wheat and 4,025 MT of wheat flour

- Russia's Ag Min said Russia exported about 22.746 MMT of grain between July 1-Feb 1, 2016/17, up by 1.2% from 22.466 MMT a year ago, including:

  • wheat – 17.728 MMT (16.813 MMT a year ago);
  • barley – 1.985 MMT (3.398 MMT);
  • corn – 2.877 MMT (2.071 MMT);
  • others – 156 TMT (183 TMT)

- Russia has 4,037,300 MT of grain in its federal intervention fund as of February 2 vs. 2,859,600 MT a year ago

- USDA attaché lowered its forecast of South Korea's wheat imports in 2016/17 to 4.56 MMT (incl. 2.0 MMT of feed wheat) from 5.06 MMT (incl. 2.5 MMT of feed wheat) previously, below USDA's official estimate of 5.0 MMT but above compared to 4.426 MMT (incl. 1.8 MMT of feed wheat) in 2015/16

- Farmers in India have planted the highest ever area under wheat and pulses in the ongoing winter crop season, raising hopes of a bumper crop in 2016/17. India's wheat area has climbed to 31.8 million hectares in 2016/17, surpassing the 31.5 million hectares planted in 2013/14 and over 2 million hectares more than last year (2015/16)

- France's farm ministry trimmed its estimate of the country's 2016 soft wheat crop to 27.85 MMT from 27.99 MMT in December, down 32% from last year (40.945 MMT in 2015) and 24.6% below the five-year average

- France's farm ministry lowered its estimate of the area sown with winter soft wheat for the 2017 harvest to 5.16 million hectares from initial estimate of 5.191 million hectares in December, unchanged from last year and 2.9% above the five-year average

- Wheat rust, a family of fungal diseases that can cause crop losses of up to 100% in untreated susceptible wheats, is making further advances in Europe, Africa and Asia, according to two new studies produced by scientists in collaboration with FAO

- Iraq bought about 30,000 MT of Argentine rice from Tiryaki Agro at 534 $/mt c&f for March shipment. The tender had closed on Jan 23 with offers having to remain valid until Jan 29

- Feb 3 - Saudi Arabia's SAGO (Saudi Grains Organisation) bought 1,500,000 MT of feed barley of Australia, South America, EU and Black Sea origin at an average price of 190.7 $/mt c&f in 25 consignments for Mar-May 2017 shipment to the Red Sea ports (1.2 MMT) and the Gulf ports (300 TMT):

- AgRural raised its forecast of Brazil's 2016/17 total corn crop to 89.3 from 88.6 MMT previously

- Informa Economics raised its Brazil's 2016/17 corn crop forecast by 2 MMT to 89.0 MMT

- Informa Economics lowered its forecast for Argentina's 2016/17 corn crop by 800,000 MT to 35.2 MMT

- France's farm ministry raised its estimate of the country's 2016 grain maize crop to 11.959 MMT from 11.825 MMT forecasted in December, down 11.2% from last year (13.467 MMT in 2015) and 22.4% below the five-year average

- France's farm ministry lifted the country's 2016 barley production estimate to 10.139 MMT from 10.11 MMT in December, down 22.6% from last year (13.098 MMT in 2015) and 8.3% below five-year average. French winter barley crop is estimated at 8.038 MMT (10.064 MMT in 2015), while spring crop at 2.101 MMT (3.034 MMT in 2015)

- France's farm ministry raised its estimate of the area sown with winter barley for the 2017 harvest to 1.431 million hectares from 1.378 million hectares in December, down 1.5% compared with last year (1.453 mln ha) but 15.4% above the five-year average

- Chinese farmers will plant less corn but more soybean and coarse grains this year. China will reduce its corn planting area by around 670,000 hectares, so, China's corn output is forecast to fall by 4% year on year to 215 MMT in 2017. Corn imports are expected to plunge by around 70% to 1 MMT

- South Korea confirmed a case of foot-and-mouth disease at a dairy farm, the country's first outbreak less than a year

SOYBEAN

- Feb 3 - Argentina grants export licenses for 19,963 MT of soybean oil and 14,268 MT of soymeal

- AgRural raised its forecast of Brazil's 2016/17 soybean crop to 105.4 MMT from 103.1 MMT last month (95.4 MMT in 2015/16)

- Safras & Mercado raised its Brazil's 2016/17 soybean crop projection to 107.09 MMT from previous forecast of 106.08 MMT in December and 10.2% above the 2015/16 season

- Informa Economics lifted its forecast of Brazil's 2016/17 soybean harvest to 106.5 MMT, up from its previous estimate of 105 MMT

- Informa Economics kept its estimate of Argentina's 2016/17 soybean production at 55 MMT, unchanged from last month

- Strategie Grains lowered its 2017 EU rapeseed crop forecast to 21.56 MMT, down 510,000 MT from previous but up 7.5% from the 2016 harvest (20.05 MMT), mainly due to expected damage to crops from severe cold last month in the east of the block

- Strategie Grains raised its 2017 EU sunflower crop forecast to 8.6 MMT, up 60,000 MT from previous and 3.6% above the 2016 harvest (8.3 MMT)

- Strategie Grains trimmed its 2017 EU soybean crop forecast to 2.5 MMT from 2.51 MMT previously but up 6.4% from the 2016 harvest (2.35 MMT)

- France's farm ministry lifted its estimate for 2016 French rapeseed output to 4.719 MMT from 4.65 MMT in Dec, down 11.5% from last year (5.334 MMT in 2015) and 9.4% below five-year average

- France's farm ministry trimmed its estimate of the area sown with winter rapeseed for the 2017 harvest to 1.437 million hectares from 1.445 million hectares in December, down 7.1% from last year and 5.3% below the five-year average
