What Challenges Are Morocco's Farmers Facing in 2017 Jan. 19, 2017
Highlights
For MY 2016/17, FAS Rabat revised post's estimate for wheat imports from 5 million MT to 5.5 million MT. This change is based on increasing import demand as a result of tightening stocks and the results of the most recent tender. In addition, the MY 2017/18 season started very late, due to rain delays and some areas sowing did not finish until the end of December 2016. According to the Ministry of Agriculture's latest statement, total area planted to cereals (common wheat, durum, and barley) in the 2017 season, as of January 15, is estimated at 4.8 million hectares.
General InformationMY 2016/17
Post revised its forecast for Morocco's MY2016/17 wheat imports from 5 million MT to 5.5 million MT. This change is based on increasing import demand as a result of tightening stocks and the results of the most recent tender. As of January 1, 2017, Morocco estimates its total stock of common wheat at 150,000 MT, durum wheat at 60,000 MT, and barley at 100,000 MT. According to the trade, these stocks will cover domestic demand only through the end of February, and consequently, imports are expected to increase. On December 27, 2016, the Cereals Office (ONCIL), under the Ministry of Agriculture, solicited bids from importers for licenses to import wheat under the U.S. and EU tariff rate quotas (TRQ).
