WHEAT

- Oct 20 - Egypt's GASC bought 120,000 MT of Russian wheat for November 21-30 delivery:

  • 60,000 MT of Russian wheat from Cargill at 189.29 $/mt c&f (179.55 $/mt fob+9.74 $/mt freight);
  • 60,000 MT of Russian wheat from ECTP at 189.59 $/mt c&f (179.85 $/mt fob+9.74 $/mt freight

- Oct 20 - USDA announced export sales of 114,000 MT of US wheat (41,000 MT of soft white wheat and 73,000 MT of hard red spring wheat) for delivery to unknown destinations during 2016/17

- Oct 20 - Argentina grants export licenses for 25,500 MT of low protein wheat

- Informa Economics estimated US winter wheat plantings for 2017 harvest at 35.421 million acres and total US 2017 wheat seeding at 48.925 million acres, the fewest since 1970

- Weekly US wheat export sales data for week ended Oct 13 totalled 513,800 MT for 2016/17 (within trade expectations of 350-550 TMT). Export commitments for 2016/17 are running 27% ahead of year-ago

- EU in week ended Oct 18 granted licenses to export 208 TMT of soft wheat, bringing the total this season to 7.513 MMT vs. 6.557 MMT a year ago

- Strategie Grains cut its EU soft wheat production estimate to 135.8 MMT, down 0.6 MMT from its prior forecast and now 10% lower than last year's record crop. Strategie Grains also lowered its 2016/17 EU soft wheat export forecast by 360,000 MT to 23.4 MMT, more than 25% below last season. This included a projected 4.9 MMT from France compared with 12.6 MMT in 2015/16

- FranceAgriMer estimated winter wheat planting 43% done as of Oct 17, behind of last year's pace of 52%. Also French farmers have started durum planting with 2% seeded vs. 4% at the same time a year ago

- Kazakh Ag Min said Kazakhstan exported 1.97 MMT of grain between July 1-October 20, 2016/17 vs. 2.243 MMT a year ago, incl. flour – 789,900 MT in wheat equivalent vs. 849,700 MT in the same period of 2015/16

- Kazakh farmers harvested 23.52 MMT of all grains from 99.7% of the planned area as of Oct 21, up from 18.06 MMT a year ago. Yields totalled 1.54 mt/ha up from 1.29 mt/ha a year ago

- Ukrainian grain stocks were at 24.87 MMT as of October 1, down 3.5% from a year earlier, incl. 14.478 MMT of wheat (17.185 MMT a year ago), 3.431 MMT of barley (3.256 MMT a year ago) and 3.99 MMT of corn (3.655 MMT a year ago). The data does not include grain stored at small farms

- China will keep its 2017 state wheat purchase price unchanged from this year's level at 2,360 RMB/mt (349 $/mt)

- China State Council expects total grain output to climb 50 MMT over the next five years to 550 MMT

- Indonesia has rice stocks to last until May 2017 and will not need to issue additional import permits until early next year

CORN

- Weekly US corn export sales data for week ended Oct 13 of 1,023,000 MT for 2016/17 (topped trade expectations of 700-900 TMT). Export commitments for 2016/17 are running 89% ahead of year-ago

- Informa Economics projected a 3.7% decline in US corn plantings for 2017 to 90.971 million acres (94.5 million acres in 2016), resulting in a 14.242 -billion-bu crop with yields of 170.4 bpa

- EU in week ended Oct 18 awarded 123 TMT of corn (maize) import certificates, taking the volume so far this season to 2.352 MMT vs. 2.318 MMT a year ago

- EU in week ended Oct 18 granted licenses to export 58 TMT of corn, bringing the total this season to 722 TMT vs. 527 TMT a year ago

- EU in week ended Oct 18 granted licenses to export 65 TMT of barley, bringing the total this season to 1.281 MMT vs. 4.119 MMT a year ago

- Strategie Grains raised its 2016 EU corn crop forecast to 59.8 MMT from the previous 59.3 MMT, 5% higher than last year's crop

- Strategie Grains trimmed its 2016 EU barley production forecast to 59.7 MMT from last month's 60.0 MMT, now 3% lower than last year's crop

- FranceAgriMer estimated France's corn condition as 53% in good to excellent as of Oct 17, unchanged from the prior week but below the year-ago score of 56%. French farmers harvested 39% of corn by Oct 10 (23% a week ago), below the 52% harvest progress a year ago

- FranceAgriMer estimated winter barley planting 61% done as of Oct 17, behind of last year's pace of 73%

- Zambia will maintain a ban on the export of maize until it secures 500,000 MT of maize in its strategic reserves. Zambia's Food Reserve Agency (FRA) is currently holding 331,716 MT of maize and the private sector has 794,785 MT

- Sinograin will buy 440,000 MT of corn from China's top growing province Heilongjiang this year at a price of 1,400 RMB/mt (207 $/mt)

- China plans to cut corn acreage by 0.7% over the next five years, with plantings reaching 500 million mu (82.37 mln acres, or 33.33 mln ha) by 2020

- Buenos Aires Grain Exchange kept its forecast for Argentine 2016/17 corn acreage at 4.9 mln ha (3.85 mln ha in 2015/16). Exchange estimates 34.7% of the crop has been planted as of Oct 20, ahead last year's pace of 31.7%

SOYBEAN

- Oct 20 - USDA announced export sales of 192,000 MT of US soybeans for delivery to unknown destinations during 2016/17

- Weekly US soybean export sales data for week ended Oct 13 of 2,008,800 MT, incl. 2,008,500 MT for 2016/17 (topped trade expectations of 1-1.3 MMT). Export commitments for 2016/17 are running 26% ahead of year-ago

- Informa Economics projected a 5.7% increase in US soybean plantings for 2017 to a record high of 88.487 million acres (83.7 million acres in 2016), resulting in a 4.15-billion-bu crop with yields of 47.2 bpa

- China plans to increase soybean area over the next five years by 43% to 140 million mu (23.06 mln acres, or 9.33 mln ha)

- Ukrainian sunflower stocks were at 5.851 MMT as of October 1, down 9.9% from a year earlier (6.491 MMT). The data does not include grain stored at small farms

- Palm oil production in Malaysia is forecast to rise in 2017 by 5.6% from this year to 19 MMT on better yields and an expansion in matured areas

- Buenos Aires Grain Exchange left its estimate Argentina's 2016/17 sunseed acreage at 1.7 mln ha (1.22 mln ha in 2015/16). Exchange estimates 42.4% of the crop has been planted as of Oct 20 vs. 36.1% this time last year
